Why Won't My Smart Switch Work?

Most smart switches need a neutral wire to stay powered while the light is off. Older homes often have only a hot wire and a switch leg in the box, with no neutral at all. Since the 2011 edition, NEC 404.2(C) has required a neutral at most switch locations, but homes built before that often lack one. Crowded boxes cause trouble too, because smart switches are deeper than old toggles. And many LED bulbs flicker or buzz on a dimmer they were not matched with. These are wiring problems, not app problems, which is why a factory reset rarely fixes them. Electrical Hazards, Inc. solves the wiring first, then the device.

Common Smart Switch Problems

  • No neutral in the switch box
  • Switch drops off Wi-Fi
  • Three-way switches wired wrong
  • Crowded, overfilled boxes
  • LED lights flicker on smart dimmers
How We Do It

Smart Devices, Installed Like Real Electrical Work

We start by opening the boxes and checking what wiring is actually there. Where a neutral is missing, we run one or choose a device listed to work without one. For three-way and four-way circuits, we trace the travelers so the smart switch and its companion work together. Smart dimmers get matched to your LED fixtures so they dim smoothly. We also check box fill, because smart switches are deeper than old toggles and need room for safe connections. We hold City of Philadelphia license #37352, so new circuits and wiring changes go through the proper permit steps. You get devices that connect cleanly and stay online.

What We Set Up

  • Neutral wires where needed
  • Three-way and four-way switching
  • Companion switches and remotes
  • Box fill and deeper boxes
  • Dimmer and LED matching
Why It Pays Off

A Smarter Home Starts at the Panel

Smart devices add convenience, but they also add load and complexity. A good plan looks at the whole home, not one switch at a time. If you plan to add a smart EV charger, a heat pump with a smart thermostat, or whole-home lighting control, we check that your panel and circuits can support it. In many older Philadelphia and Main Line homes, a panel upgrade or a few new circuits make the rest of the smart home work reliably. We wire for the devices you choose, explain how each one connects, and leave the setup simple enough that you can add more later. Start with the switches you use most, and build out from there.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all smart switches need a neutral wire?
Most do. A few models work without one, but they can cause LED flicker. We check your boxes and suggest the best fit.
Can smart switches work on three-way circuits?
Yes. Most brands sell a companion switch or remote for the second location. We trace the existing wiring so both spots work.
Why do my LED lights flicker on a smart dimmer?
The dimmer and the bulbs are often a poor match. We pick a dimmer listed for your LEDs and adjust its low-end setting.
Can you install devices I already bought?
Yes. We check that each device suits your wiring first, then install it and confirm it connects.
Will smart devices overload my panel?
Switches and dimmers use very little power. Bigger smart loads like EV chargers and heat pumps may need a panel check first.
